6/30/2005 - Pedro Martinez Clinches His Ninth With Today's 5-3 Win
Pedro Martinez (9-2) pitched six innings and gave up two runs and five hits this afternoon against the Phillies. Martinez also struck out six batters, which moves him into 17th place on the all time strike out list - with 2,776 total strike outs - edging him past Frank Tanana who has 2,773.
The bullpen also came through again. Heath Bell, Royce Ring and Roberto Hernandez worked a combined two innings - with one run coming off of Bell. Braden Looper came in and closed out the game without giving up any runs or hits - he now has sixteen saves in nineteen save situations.
As far as the offense goes, today was a fun game for them. Jose Reyes hit a triple and drove in two runs - Reyes is also leading MLB in triples with nine. Carlos Beltran also had an interesting game - he stole second base and then he stole third base on consecutive pitches in the seventh. before today's game, Beltran had only one stolen base all year.
Today's remaining three runs came from Chris Woodward single - scoring Cliff Floyd and Marlon Anderson in the second inning and Mike Cameron's single which scored Jose Reyes in the fourth inning.
The Mets now face the Marlins for three games - hopefully today's momentum will continue into the Marlins series and the Nationals series that follows. Tomorrow's pitching dual pins Tom Glavine (5-7) against A.J. Burnett (5-5) and the Florida Marlins at 7:10 pm. Let's Go Mets!
6/30/2005 - Update: Sheffield/Cameron Trade Rumor
Omar Minaya has put the NY Post rumor to rest saying that it is not true and that Cameron is a core part of the Mets. Maybe it was in response to Sheffield's reaction to this rumor yesterday - which didn't go well with him. Sheffield basically said that he would do everything in his power to prevent a trade to the Mets and if it did go through, he would be an extremely unhappy player and in essence, make everyone as miserable as he would be.
6/29/2005 - Phillies Beat The NY Mets 6-3
Kaz Ishii (2-7) and the Phillies made sure that the basement was meant to be occupied by the Mets for some time longer. Ishii only pitched 3 1/3 innings, but gave up five runs and two hits with his wildness. The bullpen pretty much came in and kept the game under control, except for one run from Aaron Heilman. Koo, Bell and Graves followed with four scoreless innings and one hit combined (off Bell).
The Mets offense just couldn't muster up enough run support to win, but they weren't totally asleep. Cliff Floyd hit his twenty-first home run of the season, a solo shot in the sixth inning. Jose Offerman (PH) also hit a solo home run in the fifth inning, his second as a Met. The other run came in the fourth inning, when Cliff Floyd singled to center and scored Mike Cameron - who was on with a double.
The Mets need to pick up tomorrow afternoons game against Lieber and the Phillies! Otherwise, the Mets risk being double digits out of first place and a solid grasp on last place going into the All-Star break. Tomorrows 1:10 pm game pins Pedro Martinez (8-2) against Jon Lieber (8-7) and the Phillies. Let's Go Mets!
6/28/2005 - The Mets Down The Phillies 8-3
Victor Zambano won his fourth game of the year (4-6) by leading the NY Mets over the Phillies 8-3 tonight. Zambrano pitched five innings, giving up four hits and one run. The bullpen and the offense didn't fail him either. Heath Bell and Royce Ring pitched two combined scoreless innings. Danny Graves followed for two innings and gave up two hits and two runs, but the NY Mets offense was on target and alive tonight.
Mike Piazza hit his ninth home run of the year with one on in the sixth inning and had three RBI's for the game. Carlos Beltran was also on tonight, after stating that his leg felt better. He had a double, triple and one RBI for the game. The remaining four RBI's were from Mike Cameron, David Wright, Brian Daubach (1B) and Jose Offerman (PH).
The NY Mets have a very tough two weeks ahead of them. They still have two more with the Phillies, three with the Marlins and four with the Nationals. Tomorrows pitching dual pins Kaz Ishii (2-6) against Cory Lidle (6-6) and the Phillies. Let's Go Mets!
6/26/2005 - Mets Bullpen Loses To Yankees 5-4
The Mets bullpen gave tonight's the game away! Kris Benson (6-2) pitched a good game, pitching six innings - giving up three hits and two runs and left the game with a two run lead.
Aaron Heilman (3-3) gave up one run in relief and what followed was just a nightmare. Braden Looper (2-3) blew the save and allowed two runs to score in the bottom of the ninth. What makes it worse, was that the game winning hit came on a bases loaded single by Jason Giambi - which lifted the Yankees to their 5-4 win in the bottom of the ninth.
This was one game that was over and should have been won by the NY Mets. It's understandable that no bullpen can be flawless, but this was just obscene. The season is almost half over and the Mets have had a firm grip on last place for over two weeks. The Mets also have to play three major series games between now and the All-Star break, one with the Phillies, Marlins and the Nationals. The next two weeks will decide the NY Mets division status going into the second half.
The NY Mets are off on Monday, but will pick it up again on Tuesday evening when Victor Zambrano (3-6) pitches against Robinson Tejeda (1-0) and the Philllies at Shea. Scheduled start time is 7:10 pm. Let's Go Mets!
6/25/2005 - The NY Mets Take The Series From The Yankees 10-3
Tom Glavine (5-7) led the NY Mets over the NY Yankees 10-3 - pitching six innings, giving up seven hits and two runs. Aaron Heilman came in for relief and pitched a scoreless inning, followed by Danny Graves who pitched two innings, giving up four hits and one run.
It was nice to see the NY Met offense again! Cliff Floyd hit two long balls, one in the first inning with one on (Mike Cameron) and a home run in the fifth inning with one on (Carlos Beltran) - Cliff brings his home run total to twenty for the year. David Wright also hit a solo home run in the second inning, his eleventh of the year.
The NY Mets also hit plenty of doubles today. Ramon Castro hit two - Mike Piazza, Carlos Beltran, Chris Woodward and David Wright each hit one a piece. Today's RBI player count was from - Cliff Floyd with four, David Wright with two, Carlos Beltran with one, Jose Reyes with one, Chris Woodward with one and Ramon Castro with one.
Tomorrow is the last game of the regular season that the NY Mets and the NY Yankees will face each other. Taking the mound for the NY Mets will be Kris Benson (6-2) against Randy Johnson (7-5) at 8:05 pm. Let's Go Mets!
6/24/2005 - Pedro Takes Down The Bombers 6-4
Pedro Martinez (8-2) did what he does best - he pitched a great game against the NY Yankees! Martinez went eight strong innings, giving up six hits and two runs (a solo home run in the first to Derek Jeter and an RBI single to Alex Rodriguez in the third). Braden Looper came in to close out the game in the ninth and gave up two hits and two runs (a two run home run to Tino Martinez), but he held on for the save and the win for the NY Mets.
The NY Mets offense also came to life with solo home runs from Carlos Beltran (9) and Cliff Floyd (18). Mike Piazza, Doug Mientkiewicz and Mike Cameron all hit doubles and the RBI count came from Jose Reyes, Ramon Castro, Cliff Floyd, Mike Cameron and Carlos Beltran. Tomorrows 4:05 pm pitching dual pins Tom Glavine (4-7) against Sean Henn (0-2). Let's Go Mets!
6/23/2005 - The Mets Beat The Phillies 4-3 Behind Ishii
Kaz Ishii (2-6) pitched 6 2/3 innings today - giving up six hits and three runs - and won his second game of the season, with his last win coming on May 28 against the Marlins. The bullpen also pitched very well today, giving up no runs and only three hits. What was extra special was the offense again.
To start with, Jose Reyes had three hits and three stolen bases today - with twenty-two stolen bases for the year. This is also his second game of the season with three stolen bases in one game. It was also nice to see Doug Mientkiewicz homer for the second day in a row and at the same time, drive in two runs. The Mets need some momentum as they take on the Yankees tomorrow night in the Bronx at 7:05 pm. The pitching dual pins Pedro Martinez (7-2) against Mike Mussina (8-4). Let's Go Mets!
6/22/2005 - The Phillies Beat The Mets 8-4
The NY Mets have now lost ten of their last thirteen games. Victor Zambrano (3-6) gave up two two runs and six hits in six innings of work. He didn't have his best stuff tonight, but he pitched well enough to keep the Mets in the game. The bullpen on the other hand, just didn't have it tonight. Royce Ring gave up one run and Aaron Heilman gave up five runs in the seventh inning.
On the offensive side, Cliff Floyd hit his 17th home run of the season and Mike Piazza hit his 8th home run of the season and his 386th of his career, moving him into 47th place on the all time list for homers. Tomorrow afternoons (1:05 pm) pitching match up pins Kaz Ishii (1-6) against Cory Lidle (6-5). Let's Go Mets!
6/21/2005 - The Mets Finally Win One 8-5
The NY Mets finally won a game! They beat the Phillies 8-5 behind Kris Benson (6-2), who went six innings, giving up five runs and nine hits. But, the bullpen held it together - Ring, Hernandez and Looper only gave up one hit in relief and didn't give up any runs. In the end Kris Benson earned his sixth win of the year with the help of the bullpen and finally some offensive support.
It was finally time that the NY Mets offense came to life - Doug Mientkiewicz, Mike Piazza, David Wright and Carlos Beltran all hit doubles. Jose Reyes hit a triple and Doug Mientkiewicz also hit a home run, along with a pinch hit home run from Brian Daubach (First Base/Left Field). It was also nice to see some RBI's for a change, including one by David Wright, Victor Diaz, Carlos Beltran, Doug Mientkiewicz, Cliff Floyd and Brian Daubach.
Hopefully the moment won't stop any time soon and the Mets can gain some desperately needed wins. Tomorrow nights match up pins Victor Zambrano (3-6) against Robinson Tejeda (1-0). Let's Go Mets!
6/19/2005 - Seattle Sweeps The NY Mets 11-5
What is going on with the Mets!?!? They are absolutely horrible and are really painful to even watch! Tom Glavine (4-7) pitched his shortest outing since June 5, 2005 against the Brewers. He made it to only the second inning, giving up six runs and eight hits - Glavine also only has one win in six starts. Mike DeJean didn't fair any better, he gave up four runs and two hits in less than an inning of work.
On the brighter side, Aaron Heilman has really been solid coming out of the bullpen, going over two scoreless innings today. And the NY Mets offense slowly came back to like today, Cliff Floyd hit a solo home run in the second inning, his 16th of the season and Mike Piazza had a remarkable three hit day.
Now back to reality, the NY Mets have a very tough schedule right up to the All Star break. Facing the Phillies six times and the Yankees three times this month, followed by a July series with the Marlins, Nationals and Pirates. If the Mets don't do something quickly, this season will be like the past few years - disappointing. Monday is an off day for the Mets, who pick it up Tuesday night with the Phillies. The pitching match up is Kris Benson (5-2) against Vicente Padilla (3-6). Let's Go Mets!
6/18/2005 - Seattle Over The Mets Again 4-1
Pedro Martinez (7-2) lost to the Seattle Mariners, his first lose since April 26 in Atlanta and his first lose in fourteen starts against the Mariners. Martinez pitched six innings and gave up four runs and nine hits. It was also another offensively silent night. The NY Mets need to right this mess quickly. Let's Go Mets!
6/17/2005 - The New York Mets Lose To The Mariners 5-0
Kaz Ishii (1-6) pitched 5.2 inings and gave up nine hits and five runs, including four RBI's to Ichiro Suzuki. After Ishii left, Aaron Heilman and Mike DeJean both pitched scoreless innings. In the end, Ishii gave up too many runs and the NY Mets offense was once again silent. Tomorrow nights pitching match up pins Pedro Martinez (7-1) against Ryan Franklin (2-8). Let's Go Mets!
6/16/2005 - The NY Mets Finally Take One From The A's 9-6
Today's game was unusual in many ways. Let's first start with pitching, Kris Benson (5-2) pitched a very nice six innings, giving up seven hits and three runs - with two of the runs being home runs. I don't believe that Kris Benson has ever had so many back to back wins, nor has he ever been so consistent. But, the really unusual part of the game was Mike Piazza and Carlos Beltran both homering in the same game.
Carlos Beltran (.278, 8 HR and 32 RBI's) finally hit a home run, during a seven run - fifth inning rally - during a game that Pedro Martinez didn't pitch in, and Mike Piazza (.264, 7 HR and 29 RBI's) also hit a solo home run in the seventh inning. Both of these superstars have been very quiet this year and it was pleasantly shocking to see them both take it up a notch in the same game together.
It's also puzzling as to why Carlos Beltran has virtually been silent all year. Is the New York spotlight too much for him? Is he physically up to par? Only time will tell. As far as Mike Piazza's performance, everyone has already sent him off to a nursing home because of his age and performance as of late. But, if you look at both Piazza'a and Beltran's stats - they are both fairly equal.
It's just amazing how so many NY Met fans knock Mike Piazza. Mike has been the one solid anchor for the NY Mets for so many years and has contributed way more than can be expected of one player. Does he have his downside - absolutely. But, why rip apart the one player that has held the Mets together for so long without any real support? On the other hand, it doesn't mean that Beltran should be torn apart either. Let's see how he does over the next few months.
In the end, it was pleasantly unusual to see both players pull it together in the same game for the victory - let's hope this wasn't a one hit wonder game. Friday nights pitching match up pins Kaz Ishii (1-5) against Jamie Moyer (5-2) of the Seattle Mariners. Let's Go Mets!
6/16/2005 - Jose Reyes Will Be #2
As soon as Mike Cameron feels better, he will be the NY Mets new leadoff hitter and Jose Reyes, now the leadoff hitter, will be the in the number two spot. Jose Reyes's average is .263 and has about one walk in every thirty four at bats and a .286 OBP (on base percentage). On the other hand, Mike Cameron's average is .320 and a .426 OBP.
6/15/2005 - The Mets Are Spiraling Out Of Control With A 5-0 Loss
The NY Mets are simply awful to even watch as of late. They lost their sixth game tonight, out of their last seven games, against the west coasts American League cellar-dwellers - the A's.
Some NY Met fans would love to blame the loss on Victor Zambrano (3-6), but he pitched rather well tonight - giving up two runs and five hits in 7.2 innings of work. It was 2-2 going into the ninth inning, when Roberto Hernandez gave up the game winning single to Marco Scutaro, anyone remember this former NY Met?
The NY Mets seem to have lost their drive as of late. They do appear to be a better team than last year, but the same issues are still present. They win a few games and NY Met fans feel that something is in the works, then they lose the same amount of games - or more - and NY Mets fans feel less than satisfied with their team, then the cycle repeats. Tomorrows game is the last of the three game series with the A's, hopefully the NY Mets can salvage at least one victory. Tomorrows pitching match up pins Kris Benson (4-2) against Ryan Glynn (0-2). Let's Go Mets!
6/15/2005 - Miguel Cairo Is Placed On DL
Miguel Cairo was placed on the fifteen day DL today due to a strained left hamstring. In his place, the NY Mets called up Triple A first baseman/outfielder Brian Daubach.
6/14/2005 - The Mets Drop The Series Opener To The A's 5-0
The NY Mets lost the series opener and their fifth game, out of their last six, to the Oakland A's tonight behind Tom Glavine - who gave up four runs on ten hits in six innings of work. Danny Graves came in and made his first relief start for the NY Mets, pitching a scoreless seventh. Mike DeJean picked it up in the eighth and gave up one run (a home run) on two hits for a final 5-0 defeat.
The NY Mets offense was also non-existent tonight, with only one hit over the first seven innings. The NY Mets are once again at the .500 mark. Without some major pitching changes and consistent offense, the Mets will only hover around this mark for the rest of the year, if they are lucky, and they will not be in the post season.
There will be some surges to make the fans feel there's a chance, but it will only be followed by a string of losses that will negate the wins. Let's all hope that Minaya, Randolph and the NY Mets can right this mess. On a side note, Mike Cameron was off due to a strained right quad muscle and a swollen left ring finger, he was replaced with Victor Diaz who went 0-3 tonight. Tomorrow nights pitching dual pins Victor Zambrano (3-6) against Danny Haren (4-7). Let's Go Mets!
6/12/2005 - The NY Mets May Get A New Stadium
In hopes of NYC landing the 2012 Olympics, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said that the City would consider building a baseball stadium for the NY Mets - since the planned West Side football stadium was rejected by New York State Politicians. The proposed new stadium would be built next to Shea and is projected to be completed by 2009, with the City and State paying $160 million in infrastructure. Mayor Bloomberg also said that all NY Met home games could be played at Yankee Stadium during the Olympics, if NYC wins the Olympic bid.
6/12/2005 - The Angels Down The Mets 4-3
The Angels beat the sluggish NY Mets 4-3 today and in the process won the three game series. Could it have been too much celebrating last night for Jose Reyes 22nd birthday and a great come from behind victory party? Both understandable reasons to celebrate! But, the Amazing's have now dropped four out of their last five games - which is definitely no reason to celebrate. Especially when they are now five games out of first, in last place and the Washington Nationals have a firm grip on first with their latest ten game winning streak. The NY Mets are off tomorrow and will pick it up again on Tuesday when they face the Oakland A's for a three game series. The scheduled pitching match up pins Tom Glavine (4-5) against Joe Blanton (1-6). Let's Go Mets!
6/11/2005 - The Miracle Mets Win 5-3!
What a comeback night for the NY Mets! Before the recap, take a look at some of the other stats for the day. First, the entire National League Eastern division won. Second, it was Jose Reyes 22nd birthday (nice present). Third, the NY Mets showed that they are fighters!
Now back to the recap - Kris Benson and the bullpen really did a very good job tonight. Kris Benson gave up two runs on four hits in seven innings of work, followed by Heilman who came into a 2-1 Angels lead and pitched two great scoreless innings. With the Mets losing 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Marlon Anderson hit an amazing inside the park home run to tie the game 2-2 - the first time that was done in Shea for sixteen years.
Braden Looper came in to pitch the tenth and gave up an RBI single on Mientkiewicz's second error of the season, which put the Angels back on top 3-2. With the Mets down to their last strike with runners on first and third, and the Angels pitcher, Brendan Donnelly, working deep into the pitch count - Cliff Floyd hit a three run home run on a full count to snap the NY Mets three game losing streak and claim a 5-3 victory! It's been a long time since the Mets showed they will fight to the end. What a great time to be a NY Met fan! Let's Go Mets!
6/11/2005 - The NY Mets Sign Danny Graves
The NY Mets officially signed former Cincinnati Reds closer Danny Graves today for $700,000 and designated, relief pitcher, Manny Aybar for assignment.
6/10/2005 - The Cellar-Dwellers Are Back With A 12-2 Loss
With tonight's loss to the Angels (12-2), the NY Mets now have sole possession of last place in the National League East. It's unbelievable how a few losses can really change the standings of a team. The Phillies, who had clinched last place for so long, are now the division leaders and the NY Mets, who were in second and trying to reach first, are now back to last place - where they were for only a few hours on June 5. And if the Mets keep performing - both players and management- the way they did tonight, they will remain in last place.
It's also really sickening to see the way the Mets brass defend bad pitching acquisitions, mainly Zambrano and Ishii. It seems that the worse a player performs, the better chance he has of being a starter and the better he performs, he probably will be sent to the bullpen. Take a look a Ishii and Zambrano, both players can give some quality innings. But, they also can be a real nightmare on the mound - just look at tonight! Are they any better than Aaron Heilman? No! The problem lies with ego. The NY Mets made a bad trade for Zambrano and it seems they will fight to the end on using him and defending him. The same also goes for Kaz Ishii, that trade cost them Phillips who is performing, average wise, the same as Mike Piazza and is also going to be used and defended to the end. Heilman can be shaky and has been inconsistent. But, he has been very sharp out of the bullpen and a real asset to the team. Heilman really deserves a few starts to see how he does, he can't be any worse than Ishii.
Back to tonight's nightmare. The NY Mets only runs in the game came in the third inning and fifth inning. Jose Reyes singled to center and Ramon Castro scored in the third and Miguel Cairo hit a sacrifice fly to left and Ramon Castro scored in the fifth. Kaz Ishii (1-5) actually pitched very well up into the sixth inning, when he just imploded. In the end, he pitched into the sixth, giving up five runs on six hits. The bullpen, except for Royce Ring, came in and gave up seven more runs. Mike DeJean gave up two runs on four hits and Manny Aybar gave up five runs on two hits. Let's hope Kris Benson can right this sinking ship. Tomorrow night's game pins Kris Benson (4-2) against Jarrod Washburn (3-3) at 7:10 pm. Let's Go Mets!
6/9/2005 - The NY Mets Lost Again To The Astros 6-3
The NY Mets lost their second in a row, and the series, by a score of 6-3 in the eleventh inning. Tom Glavine gave up three runs on seven hits over seven innings of work. Hernandez and Looper held the game together until Heath Bell fell apart in the eleventh inning giving up three runs. Bell was also charged with the loss and is now 0-3 for the year. Why Randolph didn't bring in Heilman sooner will be a mystery. Hopefully the Mets can get on track tomorrow night when the Angels come into town. The pithing match up pins Kaz Ishii (1-4) against Bartolo Colon (7-3) at 7:10. Let's Go Mets!
6/9/2005 - The NY Mets Load Up With Pitchers In The Draft
The NY Mets are loading up their farm system with pitchers. Within twenty four hours, twenty six high school and college pitchers were selected.
6/8/2005 - The Astros Beat The NY Mets 4-1
The NY Mets did some offensive damage first, but it wan't enough. Roman Castro came into the game, after Mike Piazza was hit with a foul ball on his left wrist, and immediately made a contribution. He hit a double to deep left, scoring Mike Cameron and moving Carlos Beltran to third base. Unfortunately, the offensive rally ended there. The NY Mets went on to strand eleven base runners, including a bases loaded situation where Carlos Beltran struck out. The loss goes to Victor Zambrano (3-6) who pitched six innings, giving up three runs on six hits. Heath Bell gave up the fourth run, a home run by Palmeiro, in the seventh inning. Tomorrow nights pitching match up pins Tom Glavine (4-5) against Andy Pettitte (3-6). Let's Go Mets!
6/8/2005 - Mike Piazza Is Listed Day To Day
Mike Piazza had to leave Wednesdays game against the Astros after he was hit with a foul ball on his left wrist. Thankfully, x-rays didn't reveal anything serious.
6/7/2005 - The Mets Beat The Astros 3-1
When Pedro Martinez (7-1) is on - he is on! Martinez pitched a no hitter into the seventh inning, when Chris Burke hit his first home run of his major league career. But it didn't stop Martinez, he went on to strikeout twelve batters and pitched a two hitter complete game, his second of the year and fifth of his career. Tonight's game was also Martinez's fourth double digit strikeout game this season and the 103rd of the year, helping Pedro Martinez keep his position as the National League strike out leader with 104. Today's RBI's came from Carlos Beltran, Cliff Floyd and Marlon Anderson. Tomorrow nights match up pins Victor Zambrano (3-5) against Brandon Backe (5-3). Let's Go Mets!
6/7/2005 - Reds Release Danny Graves & The NY Mets Want Him
The Cincinnati Reds released closer Danny Graves and the NY Mets are interested in signing him. The Reds designated Graves for assignment on May 23rd when the Reds couldn't make a trade for him. Graves accumulated ten saves and an ERA of 7.36 this year, which includes eight strike outs and twelve walks. Graves is also in his last year of a $17.25 million three year contract, of which $6.25 million is owed to him this year - of which the NY Mets would have pay some part of.
6/7/2005 - Opening Round Of The 2005 First Year Player Draft
The NY Mets selected Mike Pelfrey, a 21 year old six foot-seven inch right handed pitcher, today in the first year player draft. Pelfrey is considered to be one of the top pitchers in America with an 11-2 record and an ERA of 1.47 over 16 games with Wichita State. He has also accummulated 121 strike outs in 117 innings of work and his fastball has been clocked at 97 mph. On an interesting side note, Mike Pelfreys' agent is Scott Boras - the same agent for Carlos Beltran. Let's Go Mets!
6/5/2005 - NY Mets Climb Out Of The Cellar With A 12-1 Win!
Thank goodness the NY Mets were only in last place for a couple of hours. Just take a look how competitive the National League East is. Last week the Marlins were the division leaders, now they are the cellar-dwellers.
Anyway, back to tonight's blow out. The NY Mets pounded the Giants down to size with a 12-1 victory. Kris Benson (4-2), pitched strong into the seventh inning, giving up only one run on three hits. And what a night it was for the offense, Jose Reyes hit two doubles and Kris Benson helped his cause by also hitting one. David Wright and Victor Diaz both hit homers with Cliff Floyd Hitting two home runs, numbers 13 and 14. Tonight's RBI recap is also as impressive...Cliff Floyd had four, David Wright, Kris Benson and Victor Diaz each had two, and Carlos Beltran, Kaz Matsui and Jose Reyes had one a piece. What a great Mets baseball evening.
The NY Mets are off tomorrow night, but will pick up the action again on Tuesday night at Shea stadium when Pedro Martinez (6-1) and the NY Mets take on Roy Oswalt (6-6) and the Houston Astros at 7:10 pm. Let's Go Mets!
6/5/2005 - Giants Beat The Cellar-Dwellers By 6-3 In Game One
As crazy as it sounds, the NY Mets are now in the cellar. The National League East is the only division that is so close, that literally one game can mean the difference between second place and last place. The San Francisco Giants ended their eight game skid by getting ten hits and six runs off Kaz Ishii (1-4) and the NY Mets offense just couldn't keep up. Hopefully Kris Benson (3-2) can salvage the last game of the series in the second game of the doubleheader tonight. Let's Go Mets!
6/4/2005 - NY Mets Beat The Giants 5-1
Tom Galvine (4-5) is starting to look like the CY Young winner that he once was. Glavine pitched into the eighth inning, giving up one run on eight hits. The only run of the game for the Giants came off Moises Alous' home run in the fourth inning.
On a side note, the Giants are in midst of their longest losing streak since they lost eight in a row in May of 2000. The Giants then went on to claim the best record in baseball by the seasons end. Interestingly enough, the NY Yankees lost their sixth game in a row last night and it is also their longest losing streak since they dropped seven straight in September and October of 2000. The NY Yankees then went on to win the World Series. Let's see what happens this year!
Today's game was definitely a result of Glavine's pitching performance, but the NY Mets offense wasn't far behind. Mike Cameron hit his sixth home run of the season, Mike Piazza hit a two run RBI single that drove in Jose Reyes and Mike Cameron and David Wright also had a an RBI single that drove in Mike Piazza. Roberto Hernandez came in the eighth inning and retired his batter, then Aaron Heilman pitched the ninth and closed out the game without any runs scoring. Let's Go Mets!
6/3/2005 - The NY Mets vs Giants Opener Is Rained Out
The NY Mets and the San Francisco Giants game was rained out tonight and will be made up on Sunday, June 5 at 4:10 PM, as part of a double header. Kazuhisa Ishii will face Brett Tomko in game one and Kris Benson will face Jason Schmidt in game two, which is still scheduled for 8:05 PM. Let's Go Mets!
6/2/2005 - Pedro Martinez Owned The Diamondbacks For A 6-1 Win
Pedro Martinez (6-1) pitched another gem tonight. He struck out nine D-Backs over eight innings of work, giving up five hits and one run - a home run by Tony Clark in the second inning. But, the NY Mets answered in the fourth inning with four runs, including a solo home run by Carlos Beltran - who now has seven home runs for the year and all have been hit when Pedro Martinez pitches! Pedro Martinez also got his first hit as a NY Met and his first in eight years. Cliff Floyd and Kaz Matsui each hit RBI doubles, with Matsui's shot being a two run RBI. The normal bullpen rotation rested tonight, as Aaron Heilman came in to close out the ninth.
On a side note, The NY Mets have catcher Ramon Castro back from the DL and they also called up lefty reliever Royce Ring from Triple A Norfolk. On the downside, backup catcher Mike DiFelice was designated for assignment and reliever Dae-Sung Koo, who had an unbelievable game against the NY Yankees on May 21, 2005, is headed to the disabled list after his MRI showed that he has been pitching with a bruised rotator cuff in his left shoulder. Let's all wish Koo a speedy recovery without any complications. Let's Go Mets!
6/1/2005 - The Mets Beat The Diamondbacks 2-1
Can you believe it! Victor Zambrano (3-5) pitched a shutout into the ninth inning against Brandon Webb (6-2) and the Diamondbacks tonight. And what a night for Jose Reyes, he had three hits and three stolen bases, while Mike Piazza had a an RBI double to score Cliff Floyd. The downside of tonight's game is a possible injury to Miguel Cairo, who was taken out if the game in the seventh inning due to tightness in his right hamstring. Tomorrow nights match up pins Pedro Martinez (5-1) against Shawn Estes (4-3), the ex-Met. Let's Go Mets!
